About me

3 minutes

Hi, my name is Brian, and thank you for stopping by my website! I have a lot of fun making and running this site.

Day to day, I strive to be what I call a “full stack data developer”. I am a data scientist by education, holding my Master’s degree in Applied Statistics. Currently, I work as a data and analytics engineer, developing data pipelines and patterns that make data available (and easy to use) for my coworkers and teammates. I find that this role is the best of both worlds; I am able to learn and apply new things in the engineering portion of my responsibilities, and am able to provide recommendations and best practices to analysts and data users (as well as reviewing their code).

I started programming and writing code with the R language. This gave me an appreciation for how much a higher level language can accomplish, which made me want to learn more! I then started to learn the analogous operations in Python, and I began to use Python more than R once I learned about building my own classes (something which is possible in R, but is (in my opinion) more expressive and structured to do in Python). Learning Python has made me more interested in learning lower-level languages and concepts, so I have begun picking up some C and Rust.

I am a believer in constantly learning and this website is one of those learning projects! I was always interested in learning to run my own site, including designing the pages and themes. I am a fan of the minimalist web; ultimately, the Internet’s strength is the ability to present and convey information, and doing so more efficiently and with fewer frills is something that I like. That is why this site may seem overly simplistic.

I became interested in programming through statistics and machine learning; I became interested in statistics through sports. I have enjoyed learning statistics and programming (alongside school) with a lens on sports, and I continue to primarily focus on sports-based projects in my free time. Math was always one of my favorite subjects in school, and it wasn’t until I read Moneyball that I realized I could use what I liked in school alongside one of my personal passions. Plus, sports provides a breadth of freely available data online.

Please check out my Projects on the projects tab if you want to see what I have been building.
